How we calculate your product’s score

Rigorous science.

A clear score. A path to improve.

THE PLATFORM

How we score your product’s impact

From raw materials to disposal, we measure your product's full environmental impact - then show you how it compares against the market. Our process takes your product data through rigorous PEF analysis to deliver a credible score and insights into your hotspots.

Inputs

Brands input three types of data:

  1. General product information (e.g. type of product, volume/weight, where manufactured, etc.)
  2. Packaging information (e.g. what is the primary and secondary packaging material, percentage of post-consumer recycled content, whether there’s any finishing process, etc)
  3. Formulation information (e.g. what ingredients are found in the formulation, the concentration, feedstock, etc.)

EcoBeautyScore never has access to confidential product information - this remains within the brand’s own tenant within the platform.

Credibility

Our Credibility is built on transparent science

Every EBS score rests on rigorous science grounded in the EU's Product Environmental Footprint framework - the same standard used by regulators and industry leaders worldwide. We don't hide behind methodology; every calculation, every parameter, every score is fully transparent and traceable. Your environmental claim isn't a guess - it's science you can stand behind.

Certification

Independent verification before scores go public

To publish EcoBeautyScore results, brands must first complete an independent certification process. This provides an additional layer of assurance that scores have been calculated correctly and that the EcoBeautyScore data input process has been followed consistently.

Independent audit.
Reliable data.
Confidence in every score.

As part of the audit, an independent certification body reviews a representative sample of approximately 1% of the products scored by the brand. The audit checks both the data entered by the brand and the resulting product scores, helping to ensure that published EcoBeautyScores are accurate and reliable.

Certification is currently carried out by EcoCert, Bureau Veritas and AFNOR, with the network of approved certification bodies set to expand over time.

EcoBeautyScore FAQ's

What product data do I need to input?

You’ll provide information about the product, its formula and its packaging. This includes the product segment and sub-segment, formula ingredients and their percentages, product mass or volume, packaging components and materials, packaging weights and recycled content, as well as relevant information such as the final assembly zone and whether the product is a refill. The EBS platform uses predefined data and assumptions for certain parameters, such as dosage and rinse-water volume, to ensure consistent comparison between products.

Is the analysis limited to CO2 or does it cover other impacts (Water, Biodiversity)?

EcoBeautyScore goes beyond carbon emissions. Its assessment is based on a full life-cycle assessment (LCA) covering 16 environmental impact categories, including climate change, water use, resource use, land use, water pollution and other impacts relevant to biodiversity and ecosystems.

This multi-impact approach provides a more comprehensive picture of a cosmetic product’s environmental footprint across its life cycle—from raw materials through to end-of-life. By considering multiple environmental impacts rather than focusing on CO₂ alone, it also helps avoid burden-shifting, where reducing one environmental impact inadvertently increases another.

What happens to my product data? Are my formulations safe?

Your confidential product data stays yours. EcoBeautyScore does not have access to your data, and each licensee environment is fully isolated to keep your information private and protected.

EcoBeautyScore partners with Pilario for the scoring platform, which is built with security and privacy at its core. Your data is securely hosted in the European Union on AWS and protected through encryption, strict access controls and continuous monitoring.

Pilario’s security practices are aligned with ISO/IEC 27001 principles, with regular security reviews, internal audits and annual external penetration testing. Modern security standards such as SSO and MFA are also supported, helping ensure that only authorised users can access the platform.

What product categories can be scored?

Currently, the following product categories (we call them segments) can be scored: shampoos, rinse-off hair care (conditioners), face moisturisers, body wash and body moisturising products.Soon, face cleansers and leave-in hair care products will also be available.

How long does it take to get a product score?

Once the required product data has been correctly entered into the EcoBeautyScore platform, the score is calculated instantly.

The main time required is therefore in collecting, validating and formatting the necessary product data for upload. The time this takes will vary depending on the complexity of the product and the availability and quality of the underlying data.

This means that, once the data is ready and uploaded, brands can see their EcoBeautyScore immediately.

What happens after I get the score? Can I share them with consumers?

Yes, once a product has received its EcoBeautyScore, brands can use the score to communicate the product’s environmental performance to consumers, subject to the applicable EcoBeautyScore communication and certification requirements.

Brands can display the score on relevant consumer-facing touchpoints, such as packaging, websites, e-commerce platforms and other marketing communications. The score can help consumers understand a product’s environmental performance at a glance, while providing a more robust basis for environmental communication than broad, unsubstantiated claims.

EBS also provides guidance to help brands communicate the score clearly, consistently and responsibly.

Not ready to communicate the score yet?

The assessment can also be a valuable tool for informing eco-design. The score and underlying insights help identify the life-cycle stages and product characteristics that contribute most to environmental impact, enabling companies to identify opportunities for product improvement and more informed eco-design decisions. The assessment can therefore support environmental improvement whether or not the score is immediately communicated to consumers.
