Bringing trusted environmental transparency to beauty.

An independent non-profit measuring the full environmental footprint of beauty products - from ingredient sourcing through to disposal.

mission & vision

How do you tell a genuine environmental improvement from a marketing claim?

The same question kept coming up across the beauty industry. Brands were investing in less environmentally harmful ingredients, reduced packaging and lighter materials, but with no shared way to measure, no two products could be compared.

EcoBeautyScore came about as a collective answer — a non-profit working with cosmetics manufacturers and life cycle scientists, grounded in the EU's Product Environmental Footprint methodology, to measure and score any beauty product along its whole lifecycle, from sourcing to disposal.

We want an industry where environmental performance is measured the same way everywhere, disclosed openly, and improved over time — where shoppers can compare and brands can prove progress with evidence, not adjectives.

"The rules of what is measured, how it is scored, how it is reported — are set independently of any single member's commercial interest."

our values

The EcoBeautyScore Association is guided by the following values:

Journey so far

From a shared ambition to a global environmental scoring system for beauty.

Creating a credible, science-based way to measure the environmental impact of beauty products was never going to happen overnight. It required industry collaboration, scientific rigour and a willingness to challenge and refine the way environmental impact is understood.

2021

A common ambition

From a shared ambition to a global environmental scoring system for beauty.

Creating a credible, science-based way to measure the environmental impact of beauty products was never going to happen overnight. It required industry collaboration, scientific rigour and a willingness to challenge and refine the way environmental impact is understood.

2021–2022

Building the science

More than 52 cosmetic companies and 22 trade associations from across the world work together with life cycle analysis experts to develop a robust, PEF-based methodology and underpinning database. The approach is one of the first examples of large-scale adoption of the European Commission’s PEF methodology.

2023

Testing and refining

The methodology is challenged, tested and refined through extensive expert review and stakeholder consultation. Data, modelling and scoring are continuously improved to make the system both scientifically robust and practical for the beauty industry.

2024

From methodology to system

The EcoBeautyScore methodology and database are translated into a Saas scoring platform, designed to turn complex environmental assessment into a simple, comparable A–E score. The industry consortium evolves into its own legal entity, becoming a non-profit association (‘AISBL’, incorporated in Belgium). Extensive consultation helps strengthen the methodology, governance and transparency of the system.

2025

The score goes live

EcoBeautyScore moves from development into implementation. The platform launches, enabling companies to assess their products and generate EcoBeautyScores. The first product scores are made available on the market, bringing science-based environmental information one step closer to consumers.

Today

Growing together

With more and more cosmetics stakeholders involved across the industry, EcoBeautyScore is becoming a shared reference point for environmental performance in beauty. Brands are using the system to understand their impacts, identify opportunities for improvement and prepare for a future where credible environmental information matters more than ever.

And the journey continues.

Science evolves. Data improves. Regulations develop. And so does EcoBeautyScore. We continue to update and strengthen the methodology, database and scoring system - working with our members, scientific experts and stakeholders to make environmental assessment in beauty ever more robust, relevant and actionable.

Our ambition is simple: better information, better decisions, better-performing beauty products.

Our independence

Built by the industry. Underpinned by independent scientific experts.

Built by the industry. Underpinned by independent scientific experts.

EcoBeautyScore was created through collaboration across the beauty industry and operates as a non-profit association, with a mission to advance a credible, science-based approach to environmental information across the sector. Our governance is designed to support fair, transparent and collective decision-making. The EBS by-laws provide for equal voting rights for all members, a clear separation between the Association’s management and individual members, and transparent processes for making decisions about the initiative’s governance and strategy. But credibility cannot come from industry participation alone.

Independent oversight for the next chapter
As EcoBeautyScore moves from development into continued implementation, we are strengthening this independent oversight further.

Our Independent Scientific Committee brings together independent Life Cycle Assessment specialists from across Europe and beyond. Operating separately from EcoBeautyScore and their respective organisations, the Committee provides scientific oversight and critical guidance on major developments to our methodologies and databases. Its role is to challenge assumptions, assess scientific developments and help ensure that EcoBeautyScore remains aligned with recognised life cycle analysis principles and the European Commission’s Product Environmental Footprint approach.

This reflects a fundamental principle of EcoBeautyScore: Independence is not a one-off validation. It is an ongoing commitment to scientific scrutiny, transparency and continuous improvement.

Our methodology is publicly available, our consultation feedback has been published, and our system has undergone external review and verification. We will continue to invite independent expertise and stakeholder challenge as the science, data and regulatory landscape evolve.
